Hammeriver debut album released by Mikroton August 2010!

When Cooper moved to Berlin in April 2007, she created the band anew with previous collaborators from Australia; Clayton Thomas, Chris Abrahams and Tony Buck, and inviting Berlin-based musicians and friends Werner Dafeldecker, Tobias Delius and Christof Kurzmann. All seven musicians were interested in approaching jazz from a new and unusual angle – stretching and dissecting its powerful energy.
This collective experience of the diverse personnel also encompasses electro-acoustic improvisation, musique concrète, psychedelic rock and reductionism. But instead of conflicts, they create a music that transforms and transcends their influences – singularly original, unexpected and rich.
This very special recording documents a day of music in the Saal 3 recording studio in the grand old East German radio station. The first piece on the album, Ohnedaruth (Second Stabbing) is an exploration of Alice Coltrane’s Ohnedaruth from the album A Monastic Trio (Impulse 1968). Cooper created a graphic score that broke down what she identified as the essential elements of the music, but also allowed for movement and improvisation inspired by the original recording.
First Free, DD and Heartbreaker showcase the immense potential of the group’s improvisational language. All three pieces are edits of free improvisations.
E is based on a simple score by Cooper. All musicians are playing in, on and bending around the note E in any register – maintaining a consistent energy for the full 13 minutes – the challenge being to innovate and shape with (seemingly) limited tools.
The fact that there have been several years between the recording and release is no mistake for Cooper, “There are too many impulsive releases out there. I prefer to wait, to listen with space and distance, to hear if there is something living in the sound, something that travels beyond the day the music is recorded or performed. I hear something very alive and joyful in this recording… I’m happy to return to it again and to share it”

CLAYTON THOMAS “BAD SELF” [GUTSTRING JAN 2009]
5 pieces over 1.2 hours of solo contrabass by a dedicated student of Wilber Morris and Peter Kowald and indirectly, Public Enemy. Clayton has become known for extending the timbres of the humble bass with the aid of number plates, multiple bows and dangerously long metal bars – inhabiting areas more akin to African percussion instruments than the western classical violin family. Clayton was born in Tasmania, and is currently based in Berlin. Order online through METAMKINE

CLARE COOPER “GUT” [NNCD003 JULY 2003]
7 pieces for solo harp & guzheng

A remarkable debut by sydney harpist Clare Cooper. Finding her influences in music as far afield as that of Oren Ambarchi, the necks and Marilyn Crispell, Clare has created an inpsired work. Gut is a patient, textural composition spread over 7 pieces using both the horizontal chinese harp – the Guzheng and the classical concert harp – she manages to avoid the cliches of both.
Recorded by Chris Abrahams, Old Darlington School Hall July 2003. Produced by Sam Bauers and Clare Cooper. Mastered by Scott Horscroft at Big Jesus Burger Studio, Sydney. Released by ‘the NOW now’.

Cor Fuhler, Axel Doerner, Clare Cooper “CRAX” [Conundrom CD6 2008]
Recorded live at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam December 2007.

Another fine release from Fuhler’s willfully obscure Conundrom label … A single 35 minute track, recorded on December 21st of 2007, it’s a lovely blend of bittersweet, long tones, Dörner providing the acerbity, Fuhler the tonal ground and Cooper, a harpist from Australia new to me, the glistening pinpoints of color. Several very beautiful “patches” where the trio is absolutely unified as well as cohesive throughout. Good stuff and good luck finding it, but here’s Cor’s site.
